How To Properly Install the Cold Air Box by Dominator
Published by Crate Insider on 14th Mar 2024
Today we're diving into the details of installing a Dominator Cold Air Box. It's been many years since we last covered this topic, so it’s time for a refresh. Whether you're new to cold air boxes or looking for a detailed walkthrough, this guide is for you.
Why Use a Cold Air Box?
There are two main benefits to using a cold air box in your race car:
- Heat Separation: It separates your air filter from the engine's heat, ensuring cooler, denser air intake.
- Dust Protection: It keeps your air filter cleaner by protecting it from dust and debris kicked up underneath your race car.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need
- Carburetor
- Flat Air Filter Base
- Silicone seal (included with the cold air box)
- Cold Air Box (Dominator brand used in this example)
- Air Filter
- Air Filter Lid
- Air Cleaner Stud
- Chalk or marker
- Cutting tool
Step-by-Step Installation Guide:
1. Prepare Your Carburetor
First, set up your carburetor. For this demonstration, we’re using a carburetor from Hendin Racing Engines. Place the flat air filter base on top of the carburetor as you normally would.
2. Apply the Silicone Seal
Next, apply the silicone seal. This seal comes with the Dominator Cold Air Box. It’s crucial for ensuring a tight fit and optimal performance.
3. Install the Cold Air Box
Place the cold air box on top of the silicone seal. This box is designed to house your air filter, creating a protective environment.
4. Add the Air Filter and Lid
Now, place your air filter inside the cold air box. Follow this with the air filter lid. Secure everything together with the air cleaner stud.
5. Customize the Fit
The cold air box will need to be cut down to fit your specific application. Here’s how:
- Set up your carburetor and cold air box system as described.
- Bring your hood in from the side.
- Use a chalk line or marker to mark the cutting line on the cold air box.
- Carefully cut along the line. The material is designed to be cut easily without being too brittle.
6. Ensure a Perfect Seal
After cutting, ensure the cold air box perfectly seals the air filter from the engine's heat and debris. A well-sealed cold air box maximizes performance.
7. Avoid Large Hood Holes
Do not cut a large hole in your hood for the cold air box. Instead, trim the box to fit your setup precisely, maintaining the integrity of your hood and ensuring efficient airflow.
